Bend Youth Day Camp – Max King

In partnership with CORK, Central Oregon Running Klub, we bring you the CORK Youth Summer Trail Camp.

This summer we wanted to offer an expanded trail running day camp option for middle school students. This will be an introduction to trail running program for middle school youth that are interested in running. Our Summer Trail Running Camp was such a success last year that this year we’ll be doing it again and making it even better with new locations, more games, and more things to learn about the great outdoors.

Instead of our normal CORK cross country pre-season training we’re going to be offering a one week day camp during August specifically working on different aspects of trail running. During the week we’ll be covering a wide range of running topics and filling our time with fun games, swimming in mountain lakes and running some truly great trails.

During the week you can expect a morning run followed by some relaxation time exploring the area we’ve chosen for the day or a seminar on a running related topic, a lunch period, then either an afternoon run, hike or games to fill our time.

Athletes will get dropped off between 8:30-8:45 (location TBD) and be back to town by 4pm (location TBD). This is not an overnight camp.

His running camps focus on the fun aspects of trail running and to be comfortable and safe on the trail. Trail running, forest stewardship, nutrition, trail maintenance, trail etiquette, map reading and navigation skills are part of the kids and adult programs.

Experience Trail Running Like Never Before
“The camp is to help foster a level of comfort and independence while running trails in remote areas through education in map reading and navigation and to provide a level of understanding about forest issues and trail maintenance through hands-on work.
Our over-arching goal is to create capable trail runners and stewards with a lifelong love of nature.

It’s been a dream of mine to put together a running camp focused on the fun aspects of trail running and also provide the skills required to be self-sufficient in the forest and mountains. Really, just to be comfortable taking off on a trail with no particular destination in mind but with the knowledge of how to do it safely and enjoyably.

I’ve always felt like a camp should be more than just doing the same thing you could do on your own. It should be a learning experience where you take something away from the time you have at camp,” Max says.
