CTS Ultrarunning Camp
Join CTS Coach John Fitzgerald for four all-inclusive days of running around beautiful Lake Tahoe!
Lake Tahoe is at 6,200ft in Eastern Sierra Mountains along the California and Nevada border. The surrounding mountains range from 9,000ft to 11,000ft. The trails are soft decomposed granite and hard packed dirt with large granite boulders to navigate.
The purpose of the camp is to enjoy beautiful Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains using the power of your own two feet, all above 6,200 ft!
Throughout camp, you will have ample opportunity to improve your running skills through specific mountain ultra trail clinics and presentations. You’ll gain knowledge of the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) Endurance Runs course, and experience on the beautiful trails of the High Sierra. Whether you are new to ultrarunning or have multiple 50K’s and 100’s under your belt, this will be a training experience you will never forget.
Enjoy four days and three nights in a private house near the shores of Lake Tahoe. Transportation to and from Reno Tahoe Airport is included as well as healthy food prepared by our staff. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts will be provided including sports nutrition from Pro Bar and Fluid recovery products. We’ll have an open kitchen (we’re family) so make yourself at home. We want to make sure you’re well fueled for each day’s run!
Lake Tahoe is at 6,200ft in elevation and the surrounding mountains range from 9,000ft to 11,000ft. The trails are soft decomposed granite and hard packed dirt with large granite boulders to navigate.
The TRT Endurance Run course is challenging with significant ascending and descending to challenge you. Each run will be in close proximity to the house and will be a mixture of point-to-point, out-and-back and looped runs. Go at your own pace and don’t worry about being left behind as each run is fully supported with two coaches and a cattle dog
There will be no aid stations out on the trails. Although staff will carry extra water and calories, runners are expected to be self-supported and carry at least 70 fluid ounces and enough food for the outing.
DAY 1: CHECK-IN DAY
Arrive late morning to North Shore Lake Tahoe house. We will unpack, settle in, then head out for an easy run to shake the legs and get used to the thin mountain air (Lake Tahoe is at 6,224ft). After our run we will head back to the house for showers and our welcome dinner.

Wake up to coffee and breakfast at your leisure. Today will be a point to point run on the spectacular Tahoe Rim Trail and Genoa Canyon Trail system. The run will end in the small town of Genoa, NV, which is Nevada’s oldest settlement. Snacks and trail nutrition will be provided. We will have a picnic lunch at the old Genoa Bar. Another fabulous dinner with plenty of dessert and drinks.
Vertical gain: 3,500ft Descent: ~5,500ft
Coffee is on early!! Wake up call is 3:30am (so worth it)! Today we will hike as a group. It’s a special day with a sunrise hike up the start of the Western States Endurance Runs course at Squaw Valley, to the top of the escarpment. It is a very special day indeed and is a highlight of most runners at camp. From the top of the escarpment, we will link up with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) for some miles on this iconic long distance trail.

*Free time for beach, relaxing at the house or a hike
Departure day. Early morning start. Coffee will be on early and breakfast ready by 6:00am. Today we will run on the iconic Tahoe Flume trail with options to summit Snow Valley Peak (9,214ft). Coach Fitz will do a downhill and up-hill run clinic today. Snacks and trail nutrition will be provided.

Originally from Massachusetts, I moved to Missoula, MT, in 2008 to study at The University of Montana. I was inspired to pursue a career in coaching while earning my B.S. in Exercise Science. My professors engaged their students in their passion for exercise physiology wherever possible: in their lecture halls, laboratories (I loved being a lab rat), and out on the trails. While racing on the triathlon and cycling teams, my coaches showed me that an endurance coaching career was possible (and that I too could learn how to swim).
Being outside and pushing myself mentally and physically makes me tick, and I believe an active lifestyle is the best medicine. I ran my first ultra at the Tahoe Rim Trail 50 miler. I’ve competed in over 16 100 milers since then, including Western States and Bear 100 as well as over 35 “shorter” distance trail ultras, multiple 100 mile mountain bike events and cross country ski racing.
I was the first ultrarunning-specific coach hire at CTS in 2016 and began coaching professionally in 2013. I founded the Tahoe Ultra Camp in 2015 and since then have hosted an average of one ultrarunning camp per year. My athletes live all over the world and their abilities range from beginner to professional athletes. My athletes compete in stage races, Xterra, long-distance mountain bike racing, FKTs, mountaineering, and road marathons, though I specialize in coaching for ultrarunning.
