RUN FROM POVERTY
A challenge that will not only push you out of your comfort zone to achieve something extraordinary, but in doing so will transform the lives of orphaned and abandoned children currently living in poverty in Kenya.
Over 1 billion children worldwide are living in poverty… that’s one in every two children in the world. Or that according to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty…that’s over 8 million children needlessly dying each year out of the eye of the western media.
The Run from Poverty Experience enables you to make a difference in hundreds of children’s lives by running and raising funds to build more schools and homes in Kenya, to break the poverty cycle.
Over 10 incredible days you’ll experience a journey like no other. The total group will be around 20 people and is open to participants from anywhere in the world AND any level of running ability.
The first couple of days are immersed in the running culture of Iten…the home of champions’ at the world famous High Altitude Training Centre (HATC). Here you will be surrounded and inspired by some of the best athletes in the world including current and past Olympic champions.
You’ll get your hands dirty as you get involved in some building work at the One Heart Children’s Village so you can leave your mark. Here we also get to spend some time at the One Heart School and get to know the kids
You will be exposed to the realities of poverty and what can be done to change it as you’ll visit the street kid’s shelters, slums and get to meet the many friends and partners of One Heart. For some, it will be the opportunity to meet their sponsor child.
Then the ultimate test… the actual Run from Poverty. Choose your own distance to suit your ability. From 5km right up to a full marathon. You can also choose to complete the marathon in a relay if you are traveling as a team. It’s up to you…so challenge yourself.
A journey to Kenya wouldn’t be complete without a safari, so we finish the experience in the breathtaking Masai Mara National Park to witness the annual migration of the wildebeest including breakfast with the hippos!
One Heart is a not-for-profit foundation that was established in 2007 out of Australia and working in Kenya. One Heart’s primary focus is to change the future of orphaned and abandoned children living in poverty in Kenya, and in turn see whole communities transformed through education, leadership, empowerment and most importantly – love.
NB: Participants are required to fundraise a minimum of $10,000 in addition to travel expenses.
