Cevide
The “Kilometer Zero” of Portugal, this tiny hamlet is where the country begins.
Culture & History: Cevide is the northernmost point of Portugal. The history here is defined by the border; look for Marco n.º 1, the first of thousands of stone markers delineating the frontier with Spain.
Nature Highlights: Set at the confluence of the Trancoso and Minho rivers, it is a place of deep silence, lush Atlantic flora, and river mists.
Running: This is the symbolic start of the N1 National Road or the Caminho Minhoto Ribeiro. The terrain is hilly and rural, ideal for quiet, scenic road runs along the river.
A run to the neighboring Spanish village of Crecente across the river offers a fun “international” loop.
Clubs: No local clubs in this tiny village; it’s a place for “lone wolf” explorers.
Eat/Buy: No shops here. You must fuel up in Melgaço. Try the local Alvarinho wine (post-run!) and smoked meats (Presunto).
Sleep: Solar do Alvarinho in nearby Melgaço is a grand stone manor perfect for a quiet night.
