Odemira
The largest municipality in Portugal, Odemira is the gateway to the “wild” Alentejo coast.
Culture & History: A hilly town known for its traditional pottery and the Mira River. It feels less like a tourist hub and more like an authentic working Alentejo town.
Nature Highlights: The Mira River is one of the cleanest in Europe. The surrounding hills offer deep green valleys that contrast with the nearby coast.
Running: Odemira has several trails to discover, and is a good base for the Rota Vicentina Historical Way, a long-distance trail that explores the Alentejo and Algarve from Odemira to São Teotónio, involving challenging climbs through eucalyptus and cork forests.
Clubs: The Núcleo Desportivo e Cultural de Odemira is very active. Flexus Running Club is an active community group organized via Flexus Gym, that focuses on group endurance, motivation, and structured road/fitness runs.
Eat/Buy: Chocolataria Equador (local branch) for a quick energy boost. Mar d’Estórias nearby (in Lagos/Aljezur area) is better for healthy, organic produce.
Sleep: Quinta do Chocalhinho is an agrotourism estate with great trails starting right at the doorstep.
