Phil’s inspiration to run began with the image of runners crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge during the New York City Marathon, sparking his journey in 1997. Later, his experiences evolved into ultra-running, fueled by a passion for endurance challenges and a love for exploration.
Phil completed several ultra-distance races, including multi-day races, achieved the “fastest known time” for his age group (over 50) in the cross-country run. He finished the Spartathlon twice, setting a personal best in 24-hour races, and breaking the American record for the 48-hour event.
In 2018, Phil achieved a lifelong dream of running across the United States from San Francisco City Hall to New York City Hall, covering an average of 63 miles daily over 49 days, even though he faced multiple challenges along the way.
Phil created the Great New York 100 Mile Running Exposition, designed to connect runners with NYC’s hidden corners. This endeavor exemplifies his mission to inspire others to discover their potential while exploring the city.
Though not explicitly charity-driven, Phil’s endeavors engage the running community and inspire others to support ultra-endurance projects, showing how personal achievements can create a sense of shared purpose.
“My philosophy is to be adventurous and explore the world… Don’t be afraid of new experiences or meeting new people. You’re never done trying to improve yourself in one way or another,” he says.
“Go for big goals… Even if it seems daunting, you push yourself to see what you’re capable of.
No matter what, you’re going to come across adversity… You learn, you adapt, and you keep going.”
