Alcácer do Sal
A historic riverside town where the Sado River mirrors the white-washed houses and the medieval castle.
Culture & History: Founded by the Phoenicians, it was the Roman city of Salacia. The Castle of Alcácer do Sal dominates the skyline and houses an archaeological crypt. The town’s identity is tied to salt production and rice cultivation.
Nature Highlights: The Sado Estuary is a sanctuary for flamingos and storks. The surrounding landscape is a patchwork of vast rice paddies and cork oak forests.
Running: The TransAlentejo “Alcácer do Sal” trail (starting at Praça Pedro Nunes) is a flat, easy 11km loop through rice paddies and riverside paths. For road running, the riverfront promenade offers a scenic, level surface.
Clubs: Look for local groups affiliated with the Câmara Municipal; they often organize regional “Caminhadas” (walks) and runs.
Eat/Buy: Hotel da Barrosinha has a fantastic restaurant focusing on local rice dishes and estate wines. For gear, the nearby city of Setúbal offers more specialized shops like Decathlon.
Sleep: Pousada Castelo Alcácer do Sal is a historic hotel inside the castle walls—one of the most unique places to stay in Portugal.
