Coimbra
The historic capital and home to one of the world’s oldest universities.
Culture & History: The University of Coimbra sits atop the hill. The city is the birthplace of Fado de Coimbra, sung only by men in academic robes.
Nature Highlights: The Mondego River and the Choupal National Forest, a grove of poplars and eucalyptus.
Running: The Choupal National Forest is the premier spot—shaded, soft-surface trails that are flat and marked. For a challenge, “stair-run” the Quebra-Costas in the old town.
Clubs: Coimbra Trail Running for off-road enthusiasts.
Eat/Buy: Cozinha Consciente for wholesome, organic lunch buffets.
Sleep: Quinta das Lágrimas, a historic estate with massive gardens and a pool for post-run relaxation.
