Mount Whitney
Elevation: 14,505 ft (4,421m)
Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States and the Sierra Nevada, with an elevation of 14,505 feet.
It’s the end point of the Lowest to Highest Route through Death Valley.
The peak lies within the John Muir Wilderness and the Sequoia National Park Wilderness and is also the southern terminus of the John Muir Trail.
Culture & History: Named after Josiah Whitney, a state geologist. The summit hut was built in 1909 to study cosmic rays.
Nature Highlights: The “99 Switchbacks.” A zig-zagging trail that climbs the sheer face of the mountain. You’ll pass “Window” rock formations looking out over the abyss you just crossed.
Running: Oxygen is 40% thinner here than at Badwater. Every step feels like moving through lead. Most L2H runners finish their “Quest” by touching the USGS survey marker at the top.
Clubs: The “14ers” Club.
Eat/Buy: The Whitney Portal Store. Their legendary giant pancakes are the “Final Reward” for every finisher.
Sleep: Whitney Portal Campground (if you have a permit) or the cold granite of the summit if you’re doing a “Fast & Light” push.
