Panamint Springs
Elevation: 2,000 ft to 9,000 ft
Panamint is a Southern Paiute name for a group of Native Americans in the area; a combination of Pa (water) and niwintsi (person). The name was first used in 1861.
Culture & History: This area was once a mining hub for silver and gold, now a remote outpost with more dust than people.
Nature Highlights: Panamint Mountains are a rugged range in the northern Mojave Desert, within Death Valley National Park.
Darwin Falls—a literal desert mirage. A year-round waterfall hidden in a canyon in the driest place on earth.
Running: The “L2H” trekking route (created by Brett Tucker) diverges from the road here, taking you into the rugged, pathless wilderness of the Inyo Mountains.

Eat/Buy: Panamint Springs Resort. Famous for its massive selection of imported beers and “Rescue Burgers.”
Sleep: Camping under the stars. The Inyo Mountains offer some of the darkest skies in the lower 48 states.
