Sahara Desert

caravan-sahara

The Sahara is a desert in North Africa, covering roughly 9.2 million square kilometers—about 31% of the entire African continent. It is the world’s largest hot desert, and third-largest desert overall. Only Antarctica and the northern Arctic are larger.

The Sahara is spanning 11 African countries: Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan, and Tunisia.

Terrain Composition
~25% sand dunes (ergs), 70% gravel plains (reg) and rocky plateaus (hamada)
Winds carry millions of tons of mineral-rich Saharan dust across the Atlantic Ocean every year, delivering essential nutrients (like phosphorus) to the Amazon rainforest and affecting cloud formation in North America.

Climate
Summer highs exceed 50°C (122°F); winter nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing

The African Humid Period: Around 11,000 to 5,000 years ago, cyclical shifts in Earth’s orbital tilt turned the Sahara into a lush, green landscape with large lakes, rivers, and wildlife like hippos and giraffes, as evidenced by ancient cave art (such as the Cave of Swimmers).

Culture & History: World’s largest hot desert. Inhabited for millennia by Indigenous Amazigh (Berber) and Bedouin pastoral nomads; historically crossed by ancient trans-Saharan trade caravans trading salt, gold, and spices.

Nature Highlights: Grand Erg Chebbi sand dunes, dramatic hamada (rocky plateaus), Oasis of Siwa, and ancient volcanic peaks like the Ahaggar Mountains.

Running Trails & Spots: Erg Chebbi dune crests (Morocco), Valley of the Whales (Egypt), Ouarzazate trail paths, and Zagora palm groves.

Major Running Events: Marathon des Sables (Morocco—250km multi-stage, world’s most famous desert ultra), Sahara Marathon (Tindouf, Algeria), Raidlight Desert Trophy.

Running Tours: Multi-day camel-supported trail running expeditions out of Ouarzazate or Merzouga.

Running Festivals: Festival des Nomades (M’Hamid El Ghizlane—features cultural desert runs alongside music/art).

Running Retreats: Oasis running camps in Erg Chebbi combining sand dune hill-sprints, yoga, and traditional bivouac sleeping.

Running Clubs: Moroccan Trail Running Association, Cairo Runners (hosts desert training runs outside Cairo).

Running Organizations: International Trail Running Association (ITRA) regional Sahara affiliates, MDS Group.

Running Media: Trail Run Magazine (Sahara feature coverage), Desert Runner Podcast.

Eat & Drink (running related): Dates (natural fast-acting glucose), mint tea with honey, couscous with root vegetables, camel milk (electrolyte-rich recovery drink).

Shopping (running related): Specialized gaiters (to keep fine sand out of shoes), ultra-lightweight SPF 50 sun hoodies, hydration vests with sand-proof valves.

Sleep (running related): Traditional Bedouin/Amazigh bivouac tents, desert eco-lodges (e.g., Kasbah Mohayut), starry open-air desert camps.

Culture & History

Population ~2.5 million inhabitants, largely concentrated around oases and water sources
Desert cultures are shaped by indigenous nomadism (such as the Tuareg in the Sahara, the Bedouin in the Arabian Desert, and the Aboriginal peoples in the Australian Outback). These environments hold deep trade, rock art, and ancient archaeological history (e.g., Petra, Jordan, or the Tadrart Acacus in Libya). UNESCO World Heritage Centre – Cultural Landscapes

Nature Highlights

Diverse desert topographies include massive sand dune fields (ergs), dry gravel plains (regs), slot canyons, dry salt flats (e.g., Salar de Uyuni, Atacama), and dramatic rock formations. Global Deserts Exploration – Britannica
Eye of the Sahara: Located in Mauritania, the Richat Structure is a massive 40-kilometer-wide eroded geological dome visible from space.
