Croix Sather grew up in a small village near New York.
He started living that life of all the things that were sold and told what to do: get a job, stay in your job, become successful, buy a house, have kids.
“… and I can’t say I was miserable because I was successful and I enjoyed being a carpenter, but it wasn’t my calling, it wasn’t my purpose.
And so I was always seeking for what else. I was seeking to try to figure out what I wanted to do with my life because I didn’t want to swing a hammer and be a carpenter for the the rest of my life.
I didn’t know what that was and that transformation took many, many years to figure out what I wanted to do and then to get there. But I knew there was more for me.”
Croix was ‘seeking adventure of overcoming my limitations of my childhood and becoming things that that would seem impossible for me.’
The most valuable thing you can possibly do
“I think the biggest challenge most people have, is that other people will tell them they can’t do it, and they believe them. And then you start to say it to yourself because you hear from other people and now use your internal dialogue: it’s too big, it’s too hard, I don’t have the money, I can’t take off from work, I’m not a runner….
all these crazy reasons that are there and they’re all manufactured reasons, none of them are true.
They’re true to the extent that other people are telling you they’re true, and they’re true for other people, but if you have the desire and you start taking the action, you can do any of this stuff.
I know runners who have regular nine-to-five jobs and they take off for a week or two weeks or more at a time, so they can do these super long distance runs through the desert or the mountains or whatever it is. And they have normal lives, normal jobs. And then I have friends that have completely changed their lives and they’re just doing these crazy running things.”
Start doing it and work on it every day
“So if you have this idea, start taking action on it and start doing it and work on it every day, whether it’s running, whether it’s becoming a millionaire, whether it’s starting to date after divorce, you know, whatever it is.
Start doing something to make that a reality in your life and it doesn’t matter if it takes you a week, a year, or ten years.
When you accomplish this thing because it’s important to you, it’ll be the most valuable thing you can possibly do.”
‘What would I do if… I knew I would succeed? If failure was impossible, what would I do?’
Croix asked himself that question for years until he heard about a guy who ran across America. He thought “That is the most incredible thing I’ve ever heard of. I have to do it!”
Croix wasn’t a runner, but he trained every day for one year to get to the start line of his run across America. He ran a marathon distance and gave a keynote speech each day for 100 consecutive days. By the time he crossed the finish line in New York City, he had run over 2,621 miles.
It was less about the running and more about who I wanted to become
“So the whole idea for running for me, it was less about the running itself and it was more about that being a tool for me to get what else I wanted in life. Now, I’ve learned to love running i didn’t actually like running that much when I began, but I’ve learned to love running.
But that in the beginning was simply a tool for me to build by name, for me to do something amazing, for me to get into the record books for breaking world records.
It was for me personally to know that I could do something that amazing
So in other words, it was my way of building up my own self-confidence because I lacked some of that. And it wasn’t until some of these crazy things that I’ve done, that I started to really become a truly confident person.
And now I’m working on some other things to finalize sort of that last part of my journey, to become truly confident in every way. And so it’s a journey. That’s what this whole life is about, it’s about being a journey.”
Croix became a motivational speaker, author, ran solo unsupported through Death Valley, travels and designed the life he wanted to live.
